Soils of the Past

دانلود کتاب:خاکهای گذشته زمین

By Gregory J. Retallack

Publisher: Wiley-Blackwell
Number Of Pages: 512
Publication Date: 2001-02-15
ISBN-10 / ASIN: 0632053763
ISBN-13 / EAN: 9780632053766
Binding: Paperback

It has been 10 years since publication of the first edition of Soils of the Past. In that time the subject of paleopedology has grown rapidly, and established itself within the mainstream of geological research.

Ancient soils contain vital mineralogical, geochemical, textural, and paleontological information about the continental environments in which they formed. Advances in isotope geochemistry and sequence-stratigraphic models allow more detailed reconstructions of environmental change from paleosols and new insights into diverse topics like atmospheric chemistry, global change, palaeoecology, geobiology and mass extinction.

This fully updated second edition of soils of the past gives describes the main types of ancient soil, procedures for their recognition and study, their classification and, most significantly, a wide array of examples of how paleosols have been used for paleoenvironmental reconstruction.

Soils of the Past is written for advanced undergraduates studying paleopedology as part of a degree in geology, environmental science, or physical geography, and for interested professional earth scientists.

In the last few years however palaeopedology has become an established discipline in its own right, so the time is ripe for a new edition. This new book will be a good reflection of the current state of knowledge and be widely adopted.

First edition was very well received and sold over 1500 copies when the subject was relatively new. The field has now grown enormously and the second edition should do considerably better.
The new edition covers new developments in the field such as: Soils and Climate, stable isotope analysis of soils, soils and sequence stratigraphy.
This edition represents the only available overview of the subject at this level.

مگنزیت-Magnesite

Magnesite

A member of the calcite-type car-bonates having the formula MgCO3. It forms dolomite [CaMg(CO3)2] with calcite (CaCO3) in the system CaCO3MgCO3. Pure magnesite is not common in nature because there exists a complete series of solid solutions between MgCO3 and FeCO3, which is constantly present in magnesite in its natural occurrence. See also: Carbonate minerals; Magnesium

The calcite-type structure of magnesite has a = 0.4632 nm, c = 1.5032 nm, z = 6, and space group R3c. The interatomic distances are CO, 0.12851 nm, and MgO, 0.21018 nm, which produce a MgO octahedron with less distortion than that of CaO6 in calcite. Magnesite decomposes to MgO and CO2 in the temperature range of 625–643°C as determined by differential thermal analysis. Crystallization of magnesite in aqueous solution is inhibited by species of magnesium in solution and strong positive catalysis by ionic strength and CO2 pressure. Therefore, highly saline conditions provide a favorable environment for magnesite crystallization.

Magnesite is uniaxial and optically negative with extreme birefringence (0.191). Refractive indices are ∊ = 1.509 (extraordinary index) and ω = 1.700 (ordinary index). Magnesite is usually white, but it may be light to dark brown if iron-bearing. The hardness of magnesite is on the Mohs scale, and the specific gravity is 3.00. See also: Birefringence; Crystal optics; Hardness scales

Magnesite deposits are of two general types: massive and crystalline. Massive magnesite is an alteration product of serpentine which has been subjected to the action of carbonate waters. Crystalline magnesite is usually found in association with dolomite. It is generally thought to be a secondary replacement of magnesite in preexisting dolomite by magnesium-rich fluids. Massive magnesite deposits are found in Greece, Turkey, India, China, North Korea, and Australia, while those of crystalline magnesite occur in the United States, Austria, Spain, Russia, and the Czech Republic.

Magnesite is an important industrial mineral. Various types of magnesite or magnesia (MgO) are produced by different thermal treatment. The caustic-calcined magnesite or magnesia is used in the chemical industry for the production of magnesium compounds, while dead-burned or sintered magnesite or magnesia is used in refractory materials. Fused magnesia is used as an insulating material in the electrical industry because of its high electrical resistance and high thermal conductivity.

No engineering structure can be built on the ground or within it without the influence of geology being experienced by the engineer. Yet geology must remain an ancillary subject to students of engineering and it is therefore essential that their training is supported by a concise, reliable and usable text on the subject of geology and its relationship to engineering. In this book all the fundamental aspects of geology are described and explained, but within the limits thought suitable for engineers.

Thus the structure of the Earth and the operation of its internal processes are described, together with the geological processes that shape and fashion the Earth and produce its rocks and soils. The commonly occurring types of rock and soil, and many types of geological structure and geological maps, are described. Throughout the book care has been taken to focus on the relationship between geology and geomechanics. For this reason emphasis has been placed on the geological processes that bear directly upon the composition, structure and mechanics of soil and rocks, and on the movement of groundwater. The descriptions of geological processes and their products are therefore used as the basis for explaining why it is important to investigate the ground and how the investigations may be conducted at ground level and underground. Specific instruction is provided on the relationship between geology and many common activities undertaken when engineering in rock and soil.

Review:
decent book (and discount that creationist review)

First, to actually say something about this book, it's a solid and comprehensive look at a burgeoning field. The use of radiogenic isotopes as geochemical tracers and for age determinations of various sorts is now a crucial component of studies of all parts of the Earth system. Inevitably, a single text that tries to cover such a diverse suite of rapidly developing subdisciplines will run into some glitches and not be completely current, but Dickin has provided a very good starting point for an advanced undergraduate or graduate course in isotope geochemistry and/or geochronology. This book is just about the only survey text available, and fortunately, it's good.

A second point: the "review" posted by the 'reader from Washington State' is a dogmatic creationist screed that doesn't address the content of the book and gets the story of the Jack Hills zircons wrong. The comments by this person could be taken as the type example of a little knowledge being a dangerous thing. For those that are really interested, I suggest that they look at the original papers involved in the controversy. For those that are just skimming this site, let me point out that the "rock unit" that was dated at Jack Hills is a sandstone, so of course the zircons showed a "confusion of information" because they were derived from all manner of different parent rocks by erosion! If you want to understand the complexities and nuances of geochronology, and learn how these very different techniques are used for purposes like characterizing geochemical reservoirs, determining the temperature history of rocks, and --yes-- determining the absolute age of rock units, read Dickin's book, and only then visit the creation science sites for a hoot.

Trans fatty acids (TFAs) have been used for many years to impart desirable physical characteristics to fats and fat blends used in food manufacturing. However, clinical trials and epidemiological studies conducted over the last thirty years have shown that TFAs can increase “bad” cholesterol levels in the blood while reducing “good” cholesterol. Accordingly, they are also linked with increased risks of coronary heart disease, thrombosis and strokes. For this reason, the food industry has been obliged to find alternatives to TFAs, thus enabling it to meet the presumed consumer demand for “low” or “no” trans fats products. The issue is becoming more and more pressing. For example, US labelling regulations now require that food manufacturers state the trans fat content of their products on the packaging.

This book provides an overview of trans fatty acids in oils and fats used in food manufacture. Topics covered include: the chemistry and occurrence of TFAs; analytical methods for determining the fatty acid composition including TFAs of foods; processing techniques for reducing, minimising or even avoiding the formation of TFAs; TFA alternatives in food; health and nutrition concerns and legislative aspects. It is directed at chemists and technologists working in edible oils and fats processing and product development; food scientists and technologists; analytical chemists and nutritionists working in the food industry.

This highly illustrated manual provides practical guidance on structural steelwork detailing. It:

* describes the common structural shapes in use and how they are joined to form members and complete structures

* explains detailing practice and conventions

* provides detailing data for standard sections, bolts and welds

* emphasises the importance of tolerances in order to achieve proper site fit-up

* discusses the important link between good detailing and construction costs

Examples of structures include single and multi-storey buildings, towers and bridges. The detailing shown will be suitable in principle for fabrication and erection in many countries, and the sizes shown will act as a guide to preliminary design.

The second edition has been updated to take account of changes to standards, including the revisions to BS5950 and includes a new chapter on computer aided detailing.

Summary: An excellent, but slightly overpriced, manual.
Rating: 4

This book is packed with useful information on structural steel detailing. The authors have taken their time to compile all of the various elements of structural steel detailing, from welding, bolting and corrosion detailing, to lots of very useful tables and worked examples.
But there are two important points to note. Firstly, the authors are British, and thus all of the standards referenced throughout the book are based on British and European standards. Those of you, like me, who are far more familiar with American standards will need to do some extra homework looking up the American equivalents of the British/European nomenclature used throughout the manual. Secondly, given the wealth of information covered in this manual, it should have been at least fifty pages longer. The editing of this book is sometimes very choppy, and it does give the impression that the authors were compelled to edit some topics down to a bare minimum, leaving them with no choice but to try to pack as much useful information as possible into as few paragraphs as possible.
Overall, despite the relatively high sticker price for a paperback book that is only 167 pages long, this manual does a fine job covering detailing principles. I would definitely recommend it to any technician/engineer involved with structural steel.

Summary: a good book for rocket scientists
Rating: 2

Summary: A must for every Steel Detailer/Steel Design Engr.
Rating: 5

The basic things, which generally neglected by the Detailer, are explained well.

The typical conn. details & the most useful details are presented with the sketches.

This book contains contributions from Martin Rees - the Astronomer Royal; Aubrey Manning - biologist and presenter of the BBC TV series Earth Story; Chris Stringer - archaeologist and media personality, and a number of respected historians of science. A historical perspective of geological time, from the seventeenth century to the discovery of radioactivity, and on to modern-day applications of geochronology. Contributors come from the fields of geology and geochemistry, palaeontology, biology, archaeology, astronomy, and the history of science. The age of the Earth has always been a subject of great interest to scientists from many disciplines - geologists, biologists, archaeologists, astronomers and historians. This volume, The Age of the Earth: from 4004BC to AD2002, brings together contributors from these different subjects to discuss various aspects of the theme. It opens with a historical perspective, touching on the works of eminent scholars from the seventeenth to nineteenth centuries, describing how conceptions of the Earth's history changed over this period. We are taken from the time when state-enforced religious orthodoxy throughout Europe dictated the age of the Earth, through to the nineteenth century when geology emerged as a rigorous and self-contained science. Through stratigraphic work, fossils became established as useful time markers and the scientists of the day turned to the deduction of time from the products of geomorphological processes. By the end of the nineteenth century the debate between geologists and physicists was at its peak. The effort to quantify geological time affected the theory and practice of geology and was largely resonsible for it maturing into a professional scientific discipline. Through the science of geochronology, increasingly refined techniques developed to measure the age of the Earth. However, it should be borne in mind that the now-accepted age can be considered a 'geochemical coincidence' which still remains a contentious issue. The concluding parts of the book discuss a number of related topics: the search for the oldest rocks on earth; a biologist's viewpoint of the history and pattern of life on Earth; how a refinement of radiocarbon and non-radiocarbon physical dating techniques has impacted on the search for our ancient hominid ancestors; and, finally, cosmology and the questions surrounding the age of the universe."

This special publication is a compilation of papers presented at the Drift Exploration in Glaciated Terrain Short Course held in conjunction with the 19th International Geochemical Exploration Symposium in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada in April, 1999. The short course was sponsored by the Association of Exploration Geochemists. The volume focuses on the application of till geochemical and indicator mineral methods to mineral exploration in the glaciated terrain of Canada. The principles and examples described, however, have direct applications for explorationists working in glaciated parts of North America, northern Europe and Asia, as well as mountainous regions of South America. Mineral exploration in glaciated terrain requires an appreciation and understanding of glacial processes, surficial sediments, glacial history, and soil formation in addition to economic geology. The following papers address these issues and are organized to lead the reader from the general to the specific. The first half of the volume is an introduction to glaciated terrain. Sampling techniques are described, followed by reviews of indicator mineral methods used for diamond, gold, base-metal exploration. Lake sediment and biogeochemical methods are included to complement geochemical and indicator mineral methods. A paper describing the application of GIS methods to till geochemical data has also been included, reflecting the importance of data interpretation and display as essential parts of regional geochemical surveys. The second half of the volume consists of a series of case studies addressing each of the three major glaciated terrains of Canada: flat lying Shield terrain of central and northern Canada, rugged mountainous terrain of the western Canadian Cordillera and the rounded mountains of Appalachia on the east coast.

Readership: Professionals and Academics in the mineral exploration industry, especially diamond exploration. Suitable for undergraduates and above.

Sustainable development of groundwater resources is a key environmental and social issue for the future. To manage groundwater resources sustainably it is necessary to include protection of springs, river flows and water levels dependent on groundwater discharges, while concurrently maintaining abstractions for water supply and economic benefit. Obtaining this balance between human and environmental needs, and protecting valuable groundwater resources from over-explotation and pollution, presents a challenge to hydrogeologists that is reflected in the approaches and case studies contained in this volume.

Hydrothermal mineralization is usually structurally controlled so it is important to understand the role of faulting and fracturing in enhancing rock permeability and facilitating fluid flow and mass transfer. This is the main theme of this interdisciplinary volume and the papers included are intended to provide an overview of current ideas at the interfaces of structural geology, fluid flow and mineralization research. The volume includes some speculative but provocative ideas which should stimulate a re-examination of existing concepts regarding fluid flow in fracture systems and the genesis of hydrothermal mineral deposits. It also highlights recent advances which show the importance of the development of fracture connectivity in focusing fluid flow. The volume concludes with a thematic set of papers presenting new research results on the genesis of the world famous Carboniferous base metal deposits of Ireland. This volume is intended for geoscientists studying the flow of fluids through fault, vein and fracture systems or the genesis of mineral deposits and will be of interest principally to those involved in the minerals industry and in academia.

There is an increasing trend in the Earth sciences towards the integration of many subdisciplines. The sedimentary basin, is a fundamental focal point of many studies, which as a consequence often neglects the complimentary drainage basin or catchment. Sedimentary basins provide a record of Earth history, reflecting the geographical, lithological, oceanographic and ecological development through the rock record. Drainage basins in comparison record ephemeral landscape evolution, where topography is eroded and provides the flux of sediment to the basin. The basin fill reflects the sediment flux from the hinterland and provides evidence of the dynamic geomorphic processes. In context the drainage system and sedimentary basin can be regarded as a `production line' with the sedimentary record giving valuable insight into long-term landscape evolution and geomorphological processes illuminating the evolution of sedimentary basins.

This volume assesses the current position of understanding sediment supply to basins with the integration of the many sub-disciplines in the Earth sciences. It documents a mix of hinterland and sedimentary basin studies with a gradation from orogenic belts to the deep marine. The authors represent a wide spectrum of Earth scientists, with leaders in the science providing review papers and new-directive papers in their field of specialization.

Pterosaurs were a peculiar group of Mesozoic vertebrates, which acquired the ability to fly in an original way, using a membrane attached to a single finger of the hand. Ever since the first description of a pterosaur skeleton in 1784, these remarkable animals have elicited much discussion and controversy among palaeontologists, and many basic questions about their origin, evolution and biology remain disputed.

In the last few years, interest in pterosaurs has been revived by numerous discoveries of new and sometimes remarkably preserved specimens, which have enlarged and changed our picture of this group.

The volume begins with descriptions of several new pterosaurs from the Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous of Europe, North and South America, and Africa. Following this, alternative hypotheses of pterosaur phylogeny and evolution are put forward. Several papers discuss the functional anatomy of pterosaurs and its implications for aerial locomotion. The study of pterosaur footprints provides important new evidence concerning their terrestrial locomotion, and this approach is used in several contributions. A developing aspect of pterosaur research is bone histology, as shown by the final papers in this collection.

      Book Description:

The theory of the Earth's climate evolution based on universal chemical-physical laws of matter-energy transformation is presented in the book. It shows how the process of Earth's core separation has led to formation and evolution of the hydrosphere and atmosphere. Having analyzed the processes of heat transfer in the atmosphere, the writers developed the adiabatic theory of the greenhouse effect, which was applied for analysis of climatic changes on the Earth. The influence of changes in climate on formation of mineral deposits and development of life on Earth was considered and presented based on modeling of typical climatic regimes. It shows that the anthropogenic effect on the Earth's global temperature is negligible in comparison with the effect of global forces of nature.

      * Presents the theory of Earth's evolution based on the laws of chemical-density differentiation of the origin of the Earth
      * Discusses the adiabatic theory of the greenhouse effect with quantitative estimates of the natural and anthropogenic influences on Earth's climates
      * Describes the quantitative description of the evolution of the Earth's climate throughout geologic history and prediction of the future of the Earth's climate
      * Investigates the global forces of nature driving the Earth's climate

Light scattering-based methods are used to characterize small particles suspended in water in a wide range of disciplines ranging from oceanography, through medicine, to industry. The scope and accuracy of these methods steadily increases with the progress in light scattering research. This book focuses on the theoretical and experimental foundations of the study and modeling of light scattering by particles in water and critically evaluates the key constraints of light scattering models. It begins with a brief review of the relevant theoretical fundamentals of the interaction of light with condensed matter, followed by an extended discussion of the basic optical properties of pure water and seawater and the physical principles that explain them. The book continues with a discussion of key optical features of the pure water/seawater and the most common components of natural waters. In order to clarify and put in focus some of the basic physical principles and most important features of the experimental data on light scattering by particles in water, the authors employ simple models. The book concludes with extensive critical reviews of the experimental constraints of light scattering models: results of measurements of light scattering and of the key properties of the particles: size
distribution, refractive index (composition), structure, and shape. These reviews guide the reader through literature scattered among more than 210 scientific journals and periodicals which represent a wide range of disciplines. A special emphasis is put on the methods of measuring both light scattering and the relevant properties of the particles, because principles of these methods
may affect interpretation and applicability of the results. The book includes extensive guides to literature on light scattering data and instrumentation design, as well as on the data for size distributions, refractive indices, and shapes typical of particles in natural waters. It also features a
comprehensive index, numerous cross-references, and a reference list with over 1370 entries.

*Extensive reference section provides handy compilations of knowledge on the designs of light scattering meters, sources of experimental data, and more

Carbon dioxide is the most important greenhouse gas after water vapor in the atmosphere of the earth. More than 98% of the carbon of the atmosphere-ocean system is stored in the oceans as dissolved inorganic carbon. The key for understanding critical processes of the marine carbon cycle is a sound knowledge of the seawater carbonate chemistry, including equilibrium and nonequilibrium properties as well as stable isotope fractionation.

Presenting the first coherent text describing equilibrium and nonequilibrium properties and stable isotope fractionation among the elements of the carbonate system. This volume presents an overview and a synthesis of these subjects which should be useful for graduate students and researchers in various fields such as biogeochemistry, chemical oceanography, paleoceanography, marine biology, marine chemistry, marine geology, and others.

The volume includes an introduction to the equilibrium properties of the carbonate system in which basic concepts such as equilibrium constants, alkalinity, pH scales, and buffering are discussed. It also deals with the nonequilibrium properties of the seawater carbonate chemistry. Whereas principle of chemical kinetics are recapitulated, reaction rates and relaxation times of the carbonate system are considered in details. The book also provides a general introduction to stable isotope fractionation and describes the partitioning of carbon, oxygen, and boron isotopes between the species of the carbonate system. The appendix contains formulas for the equilibrium constants of the carbonate system, mathematical expressions to calculate carbonate system parameters, answers to exercises and more.

Summary: Invaluable reference for seawater chemistry and a comparison to terrestrial systems
      Rating: 5

I am a graduate student in the field of geochemistry and I strongly recommend this book. It will have a permanent place on bookshelf (once it arrives) as I have found it quite useful in comparing marine water chemistry to soil and water (S=~0) chemistry. The book is suprisingly easy to read, the figures are chosen well and really drive home fundamental points. And as an added bonus, there is a nice series of appendicies loaded with geochemical parameters, solutions to problems in the text, etc...

Summary: The new classic for marine carbonate chemistry
      Rating: 5

This book is an essential for those planning to work with the CO2 system in seawater. It is a valuable reference work for those who already understand the system and a useful place to learn for the advanced student. It sits alongside my Stumm and Morgan (Aquatic Chemistry) as essential books in the field.

An interesting volume presenting the papers collected for the Festschrift "Paradoxes in Modern Geology" in honor of Professor Ken Jinghwa Hsu on the occasion of his 70th birthday.

Paradox, as defined in a dictionary, is a statement contrary to accepted opinion. That a broad discussion of paradoxes is fruitful for the advancement of science in general, and geosciences in particular, has been amply demonstrated by Professor Hsu throughout his distinguished career. Not only has he propelled the geoscience community forward with his controversial statements, a number of his former students, who are currently in key positions at universities and in industry, are influencing in a similar open minded way the present day thinking. The wide scope this reasoning encompasses is demonstrated by the contributions to this book, delineating paradoxes and problems in the fields of tectonics, basic and applied geosciences, petrology, paleoceanography, paleoclimatology and paleogeography, kinematics and modelling.

These include: the nature of early magmatic and tectonic processes, supercontinent reconstructions, the state of the atmosphere and hydrosphere with time, and the emergence and development of life. The interlinking processes that form mineral deposits have always sat at the heart of the Earth system and the potential for using deposits as tools to understand that evolving system over geological time is increasingly recognized. This volume contains research aimed both at understanding the origins of mineral deposits and at using mineral deposits as tools to explore different long-term Earth processes.

Frank Coles Phillips was a petrographer, mineralogist and structural petrologist working in the middle of the 20th century. He was very influential, both in the UK and abroad and was responsible for encouraging the development of structural geology as a discipline in Australia and for the adoption of the stereogram as a fundamental interpretational tool in a structural geology in the UK. He was a superb teacher, perhaps best known amongst mineralogists and geologists of today for his classic textbooks, An Introduction to Crystallography and The Use of Stereographic Projection in Structural Geology. Phillips was the first to apply the methods of structural petrology (the study of the microscopic fabric of deformed rock) in a attempt to unravel the complex structural history of the Moine rocks of northwestern Scotland. His findings were at odds with those of his contemporaries and resulted in the Moine petrofabrics becoming embroiled on a long-running controversy, only completely resolved since the mid-1980s.

This geological biography of an importance 20th century mineralogist and petrologist takes a critical look at Phillips' research in the context of contemporaneous developments in structural and Moine geology. It reviews his work in relation to both past problems and present solutions. It will be of interest to all geologists, especially structural and microstructural geologists, historians of sciences and the general reader with an interest in science.

      Description
Treatise on Geochemistry has been published on 1 December 2003. This is the first time that one work provides comprehensive coverage of the full range of disciplines and topics in the field of geochemistry.

The application of chemistry to the study of the Earth has ancient roots. In the 20th century the subject became the organized and identifiable discipline called geochemistry, largely due to the pioneering work of F.W. Clarke, V.M. Goldschmidt, partly because of innovations in instrumentation, sampling techniques, and methodology, partly because of new theoretical insights. This treatise seeks to present a comprehensive, integrated summary of the present state of the field.

Elsevier will also offer the Treatise on Geochemistry in electronic format via the online platform ScienceDirect®, the most comprehensive database of academic research on the Internet today, enhanced by a suite of sophisticated linking, searching and retrieval tools.

The Metallic Material Properties Development and Standardization (MMPDS) Handbook is the replacement document for MIL-HDBK-5. It is recognized internationally as a reliable source of aircraft materials data for aerospace materials selection and analysis. Consistent and reliable methods are used to collect, analyze, and present statistically based material and fastener allowable properties. The Handbook is the only publicly available source in the U.S. for material allowables that the Federal Avaiation Administration generally accepts for compliance with Federal Aviation Regulations (FAR) for material strength properties and design values for aircraft certification and continued airworthiness. Moreover, it is the only publicly available source worldwide for fastener joint allowables that comply with the FARs.

This edition, MMPDS-01, incorporates the additions and changes to aircraft metallic material design properties and analysis guidelines approved at the 1 and 2 MMPDS government/industry coordination meetings.

This year, 2003, marks the first year of publication of the MMPDS Handbook and the final year of publication of MIL-HDBK-5.

For this year only, MMPDS-01 and MIL-HDBK-5J will be technically equivalent. In the spring of 2004, when the 1 Change Notice of MMPDS-01 is published, MIL-HDBK-5 will be designated noncurrent and MMPDS will become the only government-recognized source in the U.S. of published design allowable properties for metallic commercial and military aircraft structures and mechanically fastened joints. In this way, the 65-year legacy of MIL-HDBK-5, and its predecessor ANC-5, will be maintained.

This book discusses the progress that is being made through innovations in instrumental measurements of geologic and geochemical systems and their study using modern mathematical modeling. It covers the systems approach to understanding sedimentary rocks and their role in evolution and containment of subsurface fluids
Fundamental aspects of petroleum geology and geochemistry, generation, migration, accumulation, evaluation and production of hydrocarbons are discussed with worldwide examples. Various physical and chemical properties of subsurface waters, crude oils and natural gases are described which is especially important to production engineering. Among various properties of liquid and gaseous hydrocarbons the most important are wettability affecting production characteristics and ultimate recovery: relative permeability affecting reservoir fluid flow to the production wells; density differences between immiscible fluids which affects gravity drainage; viscosity of subsurface fluids affecting the relative mobility of each fluid; and fluid chemistry, which affects the absorption, ultimate recovery and monetary value of produced hydrocarbons
Discussion of the formation and accumulation of hydrocarbons includes (1) the changes in the chemical composition of hydrocarbons that originate from the debris of living plants and organisms to form crude oil and natural gas; (2) the origin of hydrocarbons in different areas of a single reservoir; (3) the conditions, which determine the distribution of water, oil and gas in the reservoir; (4) the migration of subsurface fluids until they eventually accumulate in isolated traps; (5) discussion of the traps as a function of sedimentary geology and tectonics. This is based on the systems approach to the specific geologic and geochemical systems using analytical and statistical principles and examples of modern mathematical modeling of static and dynamic systems
      * Discusses fundamental aspects of petroleum geology and geochemistry, and generation, migration, accumulation, evaluation and production of hydrocarbons
      * Presents a systems approach to the specific geologic and geochemical systems
